MERA Musical Fundraiser at MERA Schoolhouse

Jun 28

James Keelaghan, Tripod & Long Sault Trio.

James Keelaghan is an internationally recognized singer songwriter, a Juno award winner (and three-time Juno nominee), and a Canadian Folk Music Award winner. His deep catalogue includes timeless originals like Fires of Calais, Cold Missouri Waters, Jenny Bryce, Hillcrest Mine, and Kiri’s Piano. Keelaghan is also a possessive interpreter of outside material, a fine example being his gripping take on Gordon Lightfoot’s epic Canadian Railroad Trilogy. His masterful story-telling, over the course of nine recordings, has been part of the bedrock of his success along with his ability to make an immediate connection with audiences in a live setting, an ear for a memorable melody, and harmonies that make those melodies glisten.

TRIPOD is Kathryn Briggs, Terry Tufts & Beth Tufts. Kathryn Briggs is a well-respected pianist, teacher, composer and performer. As a recording artist, Ms. Briggs has a solo album of original compositions for piano entitled “Small Awakenings” to her credit. She has released 2 CDs with the configuration KEWT; a trio comprised of her life-partner guitarist Terry Tufts and acclaimed Canadian bassist John Geggie. She also arranged and recorded “Carols for a Christmas Eve” with JUNO award-winning artist David Francey, and toured Canada from coast to coast to coast both on her own behalf and as an accompanist for artists including David Francey, Laura Smith, Kelly Trottier and the Inuit duo Tudjaat. Guitarist and award-winning songwriter Terry Tufts has been a working musician upon graduating high school, active as a solo artist and an accompanist for the past 40 years. He has shared the stage with many treasured North American musicians such as Laura Smith, David Francey, Jessie Winchester, Valdy, Colleen Peterson, Susan Aglukark, Wayne Rostad, Tamarack, The Arrogant Worms, The Family Brown, George Fox, Dario Domingues, Willie P. Bennet, Sneezy Waters, Stephen Fearing, Don Ross, Tom Paxton and more. He did 4 tours throughout Canada with "Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave". Kathryn and Terry’s daughter Beth Tufts is already an accomplished musician. Beth takes the lead vocals on many of the group’s pieces with a surprising purity and expressiveness that belies her age.

Long Sault Trio musicians Linda Marie Grenier, Victor Maltby and David Tilston formed the LONG SAULT TRIO on the grassy banks of Long Sault Creek in McDonald’s Corners about 10 years ago. Like the creek, their music meanders through Folk with hints of Blues, Jazz and Traditional music. Three-part harmonies and a blend of fidldle, guitar, saxophone, mandolin and harmonica come together in a modern roots styling. As performing songwriters, they offer an engaging mix of their own heartfelt material along with some favorites that they have collected along the way.

Linda Grenier - Vocals, Guitar and Harmonica. In addition to Long Sault Trio Linda is involved in music and songwriting workshops for various events, teaches campfire guitar and is Director of the Shout Sister Choir-Smiths Falls Chapter.

Victor Maltby - Vocals, Fiddle and Saxophone. Victor is a Fiddle and Saxophone instructor in Carleton Place and conductor of the "Barley Shakers" and the group "Classical Jam" when he is not volunteering his time playing in Seniors’ homes.

David Tilston - Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin. David is Past General Coordinator for the Blue Skies Music Festival and occasional banjo paddler.
